In this thrilling novel of romantic suspense, Linda Howard cordially invites us to an elaborate wedding—one in which rings will never be exchanged, kisses will never be shared, and the bride will never see the light of day, because a killer has been waiting under a
VEIL OF NIGHT
Jaclyn Wilde is a wedding planner who loves her job—usually. But helping Carrie Edwards with her Big Day has been an unrelenting nightmare. Carrie is a bridezilla of mythic nastiness, yet the unpleasant task at hand turns seriously criminal when Carrie is brutally murdered and everyone involved with the ceremony is accusing one another of doing the deed. Assigned to the case, Detective Eric Wilder finds that there’s too much evidence pointing toward too many suspects. Compounding his problems is Jaclyn, now a prime suspect, with whom he shared one deeply passionate night before Carrie’s death. As the heat intensifies between Eric and Jaclyn, a cold-blooded murderer moves dangerously close. And this time the target is not a bride but one particularly irresistible wedding planner, unaware of a killer’s vow.

I want to be 100% real here--I love Linda Howard and she could probably publish a collection of her grocery lists and I'd still be like FIVE STARS I LOVE THIS BOOK YES PLEASE THANK YOU. However, that is not the case here.

Jaclyn, the heroine, has spunk and class (all at the same time) and the hero, Eric, is a real "Studley Do Right." However, while I was glad to see Howard return to the lighter side of death and murder, I felt the action and threat in the book was underplayed and I would have liked just a little more danger.
But all-in-all, it was a good read, filled with that instant, possessive passion that Howard portrays so well and pretty decent plot to boot!

This book is fun from beginning to end. Linda Howard wrote some of the funniest lines in this book that made me laugh out loud. Some of my favorites that I remember:
From Eric: "She kabobed!"
From Madelyn: "She killed someone? Can't say I'm surprised, that psychopathic little slut. Bless her heart." :)I've read some of the reviews here and I don't understand the complain about the lack of interaction between Eric and Jacklyn.
They are together pretty much on every other page in the book, and when they're not together, they're in each other's mind constantly. Linda Howard did a good job building Eric and Jacklyn's relationship progress into believable story arc, considering the timeline. She shows how Eric learns more and more about Jacklyn and her life from his investigation and interrogation, and liking her more because of it. Linda Howard shows how Jacklyn finally comes to trust Eric in the end through his heroic act. To me, that's more romantic than pages after pages of sex scenes.
I really like how Linda Howard shows that Eric knows quite well just which button to push to aggravate Jacklyn, eventhough they've only met for less than a week. There's one scene when Jacklyn finally loses it, after days of Eric's constant shadowing of her (she views this as lack of trust, Eric's just doing it because he can't stay away from her), and that scene was a LMAO moment for me and Eric.
If anything, the only weak part of this book is the suspense part. I still don't know the reason behind the killing but I may have missed that from reading too fast. Will have to re-read it again at a slower pace.
I would highly recommend this book. It's funny and enjoyable, solid B+ for me.

Linda Howard writes great romantic suspense. This title is in a sub-category of that genre; it contains little, if any, violence, and features a H and h who are basically stable, angst-free (though not issueless) adults. The story is interesting, has humor, and a nice sexual heat.
Other Linda Howard titles in the same sub-genre are Open Season and To Die For. An earlier example is Mr. Perfect.

Linda Howard is one of my top three favorite Romance authors. Through her work, I have received a steady supply of HEA endorphins, to carry along in good times, and to help bolster me in not-so-good. Thank you, Linda.
